If you plan on building on the property line, you will have to speak with your neighbors. Otherwise, while you legally don’t have to talk to them about your fence installation, we recommend that you give them a courtesy heads-up. This helps keep the peace and can make future talks more civil. Plus, it can help in case the installation team needs to step into their property for a moment during the process.

If you install your own fence, you must call utility companies yourself. It’s important that you do this in order to have a safe installation process. If you hire Northland to install your fence, we’ll do all that work for you.
Fences may not exceed 6 feet 6 inches. If your property is on a street corner, there is also a “sight triangle” you must be aware of regarding visibility for drivers. If you build within this triangle, your fence cannot be taller than 3 feet. For front yard setbacks, there are also rules – chainlink can’t be taller than 4 feet, and opaque fences can’t be taller than 3 feet.
In Chanhassen, you must get an encroachment agreement to build on an easement. Not only does this require a fee and legal process, but there’s no guarantee that you will be approved. We recommend just not building on the easement.
In all of Minnesota, you cannot build electric or barbed wire fences on residential property.
